Courtney Crumrin Vol 5 The Witch Next Door
Author
Ted Naifeh
Review
Courtney finally makes a friend--a girl her own age who is just as reckless as she was when she first began experimenting with magic. Is this a good thing? She also ends up in a lot of trouble.

Naifeh has never hesitated to show just how vulnerable Courtney is despite all her posturing & power. Here, he also shows just why people are afraid of her. The book-as-object is beautiful.  Library Catalog

Thankless in Death
Author
J.D. Robb
Review
Great story. The first I have read in the series, but was able to enjoy with only a few references from past books in the series. It was a bit of a twist with the killers identity being known from the beginning. The mystery was when or if the killer would strike again.  Library Catalog

The Captive
Author
Grace Burrows
Review
I just "found" this author a few weeks ago and really like her stories. Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia, is captured and tortured by the French during the Napoleon War. When he is released he finds his young son has died and his wife has committed suicide. He lives for revenge, but Gillian, Countess of Greendale, reminds him that he has a daughter. This daughter has not spoken since her mother's death. Is it her grief or something else that prevents her from speaking.  Library Catalog

Astro City Vol. 9: Through Open Doors
Author
Kurt Busiek
Review
It's good to have Astro City back. My only complaint is that the stories are all interlocking & the volume isn't a complete tale. Almost everything is left dangling. It's a good story & elaborately orchestrated, but not complete.  Library Catalog

World of Trouble

Hank Palace's final case before the end of the world: Find his sister. The Last Policeman series is tense, and this is the tensest of the lot. Extremely well-written: I don't usually like first person or present-tense, and I gobbled this one.

It is a mix of noir and apocalyptic with a twist all its own.

Comes out July 15 (I got an advance copy ;)) It's amazing.  Library Catalog
