The Secret History
Author
Donna Tartt
Review
Because I enjoyed "The Goldfinch" so very much, I wanted to read something else by the same author. This book was fine; it just didn't live up to my expectations.

Tartt is a great writer with a strong ability to paint a scene or character in words. She has a verbose vocabulary — I had to keep a dictionary close to solve a couple of puzzles.  Library Catalog

Still Life
Author
Louise Penny
Review
Set in Quebec, this is the first of a mystery series feature First Chief Inspector Gamache. A resident of the small village of Three Pines is found dead in the forest, shot by a hunter's arrow. Solving the crime involves the many personalities of the village, all described in fascinating details and through vignettes of life there. Recommended by a friend who has read the series twice, I did enjoy it immensely. I plan to read more of them.  Library Catalog

Being a Disney's Ariel lover, I am intrigued by anything with mermaids. This book doesn't flow as well as the Penguin version, but it is still cute!  Library Catalog
